‘Mastering Bahasa Malaysia is beneficial’
Malaysian Chinese schoolchildren will be groomed to master Bahasa Malaysia better with the help of specially designed programmes, said Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon.
Chong pointed out that the majority of Chinese primary school pupils would enrol into National Secondary Schools (SMK), which uses Bahasa Malaysia as the main medium to communicate, after completing their Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR).
Therefore, he said, mastering Bahasa Malaysia is beneficial for these primary school pupils to further their studies in secondary school.
“It is our national language. Every Malaysian citizen must be fluent in it,” he said.
He said the new committee will comprise designated representatives from 18 non-governmental organisations (NGO) – including the Malaysian Chinese Language Council (MCLC), the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong) and more – as well as representatives from the Education Ministry.
“It will be in charge of designing programmes and identifying the most suitable methods to help Chinese primary school pupils strengthen their proficiency in the language,” he said.
He added that the committee board members will be appointed in two weeks’ time.
He said the committee will organise a seminar in the next few weeks to discuss issues on the learning and teaching of Bahasa Malaysia in the schools.
“We will invite Malay language specialists and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka to give their views and ideas on the matter.
“Once all the issues and views have been gathered, then only can we identify the best way to overcome all the problems,” he said.

Crowds double at Malay Language Month

The number of people attending Malay Language Month events doubled this year as members of the community chipped in by volunteering and organising activities.
About 21,600 people attended activities such as storytelling sessions, craft workshops and music performances last month, up from 10,800 a year ago.
Mr Zaqy Mohamad, chairman of the organising committee, said yesterday that many of the events "created buzz and interest".
"People used to think that it is a must to speak perfect Malay," he said. "The organisers want to change this mindset. Don't be afraid to use it everyday."

ACM offers guided tours in Malay this weekend
Asian Civilisations Museum offers guided tours in Malay this weekend

Volunteers will be offering guided tours at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) this weekend.
It is the first of its kind collaboration between ACM, Madrasah Aljunied and the National Institute of Education (NIE).
The group comprises 16 Malay teachers in training at NIE and seven students from the madrasah.
Supported by the Malay Language Council, these tours will take place on September 7 and 8 to mark the launch of Malay Language month, which will be held at the museum.
The museum says the tour trail has been specially designed by the museum and will showcase objects that highlight the fascinating links between the Malay language and culture with the wider Asian region.
Conducted in the Malay language, these tours aim to bring out the essence of the stories behind the chosen objects.

Sports associations are being roped in for the annual Malay Language Month as part of efforts to engage the community to use the language.
The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Silat Federation will be organising activities in conjunction with the month-long campaign.
LionsXII captain Shahril Ishak is one of the new faces named as language ambassador.
FAS' deputy director of development and planning Ridzal Saat, said: "I think it's quite apt that you have someone like Shahril, who is young, have a young family, trying to reach out to our fans through the language."
The Malay Language Month will be launched by Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Lawrence Wong at the Asian Civilisation Museum on September 7.

Malay Language Teachers' award
4 get Arif Budiman Malay Language Teachers' award
SINGAPORE: Four outstanding teachers received the Arif Budiman Malay Language Teachers' award from Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on Saturday.
They were Ms Massuniza Ismail from Balestier Hill Secondary School, Mdm Safidah Samsudin from Da Qiao Primary School, Mr Muslim Hanafiah from Yusof Ishak Secondary School and Mr Supandi Djoraemi from Dunearn Secondary School.
Now in its sixth year, the award aims to recognise Malay Language teachers for their contributions in the teaching and learning of Malay Language in school.
Each award recipient received a S$1,500 fully sponsored overseas study trip for professional development, a trophy and a certificate of achievement.
Funded by the Malay Language Learning and Promotion Committee, 20 Malay Language teachers have received the award since its inception in 2007.

S$3.6m to promote Malay language
The Ministry of Education (MOE) will be providing up to S$3.6 million to the Malay Language Learning Promotion Committee (MLLPC) over the next five years.
This will come as a grant of S$2.1 million and a one-to-one matching for funds raised by the community, subject to a cap of S$1.5 million.
Announcing this on Monday, Minister of State for Education and Home Affairs, Masagos Zulkifli, said the money will support efforts to create a conducive environment for the learning and use of Malay.
He spoke at the Berita Harian Media Club's 5th Anniversary on Monday.
The funding will help the community to organise more Malay language and literary activities.
