Popular to expand range of Malay titles
Popular to expand range of Malay titles by mid 2017
Popular will be adding more Malay books to its range by the middle of next year, the local bookstore chain announced at the launch of its annual book festival on Friday (Dec 2).
It currently stocks Malay titles in four of its outlets, namely One KM mall, Bedok Mall, Causeway Point and Jurong Point.
And in line with the National Reading Movement to promote reading in Mother Tongue languages, Popular will stock more Malay titles at three additional outlets by mid 2017.
Speaking at the launch of the 10th edition of Popular's BookFest@Singapore, Minister of Communications & Information Yaacob Ibrahim said: "Through such efforts, we hope more will venture beyond their usual reads in English and cultivate an interest in their own mother tongue. Who knows, you may even pick up an interest in a third language and culture?"
The scale of this year's BookFest has been increased to span 130,000 square feet, which earned it the title of the Largest Book and Stationery Event on the Singapore Book of Records.
Highlights of the event include three new sections - a tidbits area, a children play area and a household appliances sector.
There will also be a booth where visitors can learn about traditional Chinese art like calligraphy as well as engage in activities with artistes, authors and celebrity chefs.
About 600,000 people are expected at the BookFest which will run from Friday till Sunday (Dec 11) at the Suntec City Convention Centre.

Promote Bahasa Melayu as Asean community's common feature
Promote Bahasa Melayu as Asean community's common feature: Salleh
Bahasa Melayu or the Malay language should be promoted as one of the main features in the formation of the Asean Community, said Communications and Multimedia Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.
He said to emerge as a community, a national Asean nature should be established through the usage of a homogenous language and as chairman of Asean, Malaysia should use the opportunity well.
"Therefore, people in Asean member states should be given an insight into the concept and features of the Asean Community and this is important to ensure that the aim of forging closer relations among the region's nations can be achieved.
"The Asean Community should be viewed as a single, unique entity with its cultural diversity," he said when opening the International Seminar on Malay Linguistics and Culture at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), here, today.
The seminar, themed "Bahasa Melayu As Asean Language", was jointly organised by the Malay Language Department of UPM's Faculty of Modern Languages and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. It was aimed at gathering the views of experts in efforts to promote Bahasa Melayu as the language of Asean.
Salleh said with about 400 million speakers in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, southern Thailand and southern Philippines, Bahasa Melayu had the potential to be promoted as the Asean Community language.
He hoped that the seminar would yield ideas to mobilise efforts to bring Bahasa Melayu to the pinnacle of the Asean Community, in which each idea and recommendation should be scrutinised and followed by subsequent steps.
Salleh said there were two major aspects that needed to be addressed, namely the status and the corpus construction aspects, which proved that Bahasa Melayu was relevant, dynamic and able to function as the Asean language.
At the same time, he said, the Bahasa Melayu corpus should continue to be fostered with regard to the use of the language in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, southern Thailand and southern Philippines.
He also said that Malaysians should equip themselves with good language skills, as well as relevant and appropriate knowledge in facing competition in all aspects.

Call for Malay as official Asean language
Call for Bahasa Melayu to be used as official Asean language
It is about time for Bahasa Melayu to be upheld as the official language at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) level and with an extensive usage in the regional trade interaction.
Pertubuhan Pemikir Agenda Watan Malaysia (Pemikir) working committee member Tan Sri Mohd Yusof Hitam said the government must bring back the importance and prestige of Bahasa Melayu as it seems to be drifting away and lacking behind the other languages.
"I disagree with the suggestion for Bahasa Melayu to be merely used as an intermediate language as the language's role is bigger, and was known as the lingua franca since thousands of years ago," he said.
Therefore the government must be more aggressive in making the language as the official language in Asean, Mohd Yusof was quoted as saying in Berita Harian today.
"This matter was brought up when I was the Asean director-general for six years but was not supported. More saddening, even the locals did not see it as a requirement," he said.
Mohd Yusof said the population of the Asean community of 600 million, with more than 300 million speaking Bahasa Melayu, has proven the need for it to be lifted as the official language.
He felt the government must also be committed to open a Malay institution centre to bring back the glory of the Malay realm civilisation.
"Such a centre in a foreign land will be able to act as a hub to introduce the Malay civilisation to the world," he said.
